Growth of Muslim Community in India During the time of independence in 1947 the  total population of the country was around 390 million. Upper caste Hindus were around 206 million; the Scheduled castes around 48 million; Muslims at 92 million.  Hindus comprised 306 million (84.1%) and  Muslims were 34 million (9.8%) in the 1951 census.  Hindus comprise about 73 percent of the population of India before partition. Hindus comprise 82.75 crores (80.45%) and Muslims were 13.8 crores (13.4%) in the 2001 census. The census data, which was compiled in 2011, says India is home to 966.3 million Hindus, who make up 79.8% of the population. There are 172.2 million Muslims (14.2% of the population); 27.8 million Christians (2.3%) and 20.8 million Sikhs (1.7%).
